Yoga Philosophy – Ancient wisdom for modern living

Start thursday 2 april

Yoga is more than a physical practice. In this course we explore the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali as a practical guide for modern life. Rather than viewing these ancient teachings as abstract philosophy, we investigate how they can support clarity, balance and self-understanding in everyday situations.

The Yoga Sutras offer concrete tools to work with our thoughts, actions and habits, and to relate more consciously to ourselves and others. Throughout this course, you will discover how these timeless principles can be applied in a realistic and accessible way, helping you navigate daily life with more awareness, freedom and inner stability.

🇬🇧 The course is English spoken. Gowri spreekt ook Nederlands, zo nodig kun je je vragen stellen in het Nederlands.

Yoga Philosophy – Ancient wisdom for modern living

We all know that yoga is much more than just physical practice. According to the yoga sutra, a set of 196 aphorisms written by Sage Patanjali, Yoga is about art of living well to create inner balance, it is everyday awareness, it is learning to know our true selves. Although all of this sounds nice and rosey, is this even possible? Considering that the yoga sutras were written almost 2000 years ago, is it even applicable for us in our modern ways of living?

The yoga sutras lay out clear pathways that each one of us irrespective of our backgrounds can incorporate into our daily life to have a more fulfilling life. Yoga is one of the most holistic models of wellbeing available and it covers all domains of ourselves – our behaviors, ethics, boundaries, our speech, intentions and emotions, our bodily movements and breath.

All these will work as tools and some of the benefits, as mentioned by Patanjali, are to:

  • Minimize distractions and increase awareness and presence in everyday life.
  • Understand and accept ourselves and the world around us. This will guide us
to reach our full potential. And, with others, we will be able to communicate
better and be more harmonious in our relationships.
  • Freedom from fear, self-imposed limitations and expectations.

In each session, there will be theory, discussion and meditative practices. The meditative practices will be based on the principles from the Yoga sutras such as; kindness, compassion, gratitude, self-reflection etc. The principles we discuss can
be used as tools for self-development. There will also be occasions where you will get reading material to look through for self-study.

In this course you will learn;

  • What is yoga? And what is the goal of yoga?

  • The different mental states

  • The cause of mental fogginess

  • Obstacles in the path of wellbeing and clarity

  • The play of karma – cause and effect of actions

  • Actions and their latent impressions and how they have an effect on our
    behavior

  • 3 different models of yoga (not the physical practice) and how to adopt them
    into our daily life.

  • Fostering good practices and reflecting on the benefits of letting go

About Gowri

I have been studying yoga philosophy for the past 7 years. I began with a very basic introductory course from India. Some aspects of it were easy as I already had a background in Indian philosophy but there are also many parts that go very deep into the mental states of a human mind.

The more I read the different commentaries, the more it triggered my interest and when I started applying certain aspects of the principles mentioned in the aphorisms, the more sense they made. To dive deeper into it, I enrolled in another course from a Sanskrit school where I studied the deeper meanings of the Sanskrit words to unpack the actual essence of the sutras. Sutras/ Aphorisms, as the name suggests, have layers of meaning embedded in them and they become relevant only when we are ready for it.

At the moment, I am involved in a joint study group with the renowned Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram from India where we look at the different commentaries for the yoga sutras to understand them better. Over the years it has become apparent to me how relevant and useful the Yoga sutras are for our daily life.
